Ugly review : Don’t miss this entertaining commotion!

Ugly review : Don’t miss this entertaining commotion!

Superlative performances, impressive story-telling and brilliant cinematography are some of the many key elements that make Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly possibly the best dark thriller in Indian cinema.

After much controversy and more than a year long delay, Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly released at last. And what a film it has turned out to be. I won’t keep you waiting till the last line to tell you this is one film that you shouldn’t miss.

A struggling actor Rahul (Rahul Bhatt) is in search of his 10-year-old daughter Kali, who goes missing from the crowded market area in Delhi. Rahul’s friend and Casting Director (Vineet Kumar) helps him to locate Kali. Kali’s mother (Tejaswini Kolhapure) is a suicidal alcoholic, divorced from Rahul and now married to cop (Ronit Roy) who is investigating the case. His subordinate (Girish Kulkarni) helps him solving the case. Anurag has weaved the story well to make it appear like a whodunit thriller but as the story progress, you know it’s not that. It’s about the principal characters and their ugly motives.

Kali’s kidnapping issue is certainly an eye-opener as to how irresponsible a parent could be while handling his child but more importantly Kashyap’s characters showcases their ugly side and selfish motives taking into account the unfortunate incident and making the most out of it.

Anurag’s real interpretation of the basic human psyche comes to the fore through his protagonists who fails to locate Kali. Ronit and his squad leaves no stone unturned to locate Kali but all his attempts fail. Subconsciously, he starts assuming that Rahul who’s also in search of Kali would get some clue, while Rahul is quite hopeful of Ronit solving the case. On the other hand, Rahul’s friend – Casting Director, Surveen Chawla, Siddhant Kapoor and Tejaswini Kolhapure takes Kali’s kidnapping to their advantage, which forms the basic crux of Ugly.

The entire cast of the film has delivered a commendable performance. Ronit Roy as a strict and helpless cop stays with you well after the film is over. Roy once again packs a punch after a powerful performance in Udaan. He easily fits into Kashyap’s genre of filmmaking. Considered as Amitabh Bachchan of TV industry, Ronit has delivered the best understated performance of his career. Marathi actor Girish Kulkarni makes a fine acting debut as Ronit’s subordinate. Girish scores well in the scene where Rahul and Vineet hastily arrive in the police station to file Kali’s missing complaint and how Girish annoys them instead of filing the complaint. Girish has a commanding screen presence. Rahul Bhatt plays his part with conviction and Tejaswini Kolhapure as Ronit’s wife breathes life into her character. Surveen and Siddhant don’t have much to do in this slick thriller but still they leave a lasting impression.

The story has skillfully lightened up by the excellent of humour wherever possible. The film is well made. The script and screenplay is terrific. The cinematography is innovative. The editing makes the film crisp.

Watch Ugly for the love of cinema. It’s certainly another masterpiece exploring Kashyap’s cinematic excellence.

Karan Singh Grover Admits That His “Love Affair” With Bipasha Basu Goes Way Back

Karan Singh Grover‘s upcoming movie Alone is surely looking promising. Since he is dealing with his impending divorce with Jennifer Winget and since his costar Bipasha Basu also recently broke up with boyfriend Harman Baweja, rumours were rife that the two of them are dating now. Bipasha recently clarified rumours from her end saying:

No, I am not dating Karan. This is easy gossip and conversations.

Looks like it’s KSG’s turn to do the same now and he does it with some fabulous humour thrown in. He said:

No I am not dating her. Our chemistry is awesome, right? I cannot imagine that I am being paid to do this. We are shooting at beautiful locations and I am shooting with this really, really hot woman and she is in my arms all the time and I am getting paid for it. I mean, I love my life.

However, Karan admitted that his “love affair” with Bipasha goes way back. Now, don’t you get any ideas. In an interview to a tabloid, Karan revealed that the first time he saw Bipasha was when she was on the cover a magazine wearing a bikini and he was completely floored.

He does admit that he was only in the 9th grade at the time. Aww.

Bangalore-based Brekkie brings your breakfast to you

Bangalore-based Brekkie brings your breakfast to you

The idea of breakfast to me is a tedious one; I’m never up in time, for starters. Second, there aren’t any pocket-friendly, non-greasy and palate-friendly options nearby. Finally, I’ve never had to step out in the morning for breakfast as a kid; it’s always been there. I think I make a pretty good case for all the lazy lumps to hop, skip and jump straight to an early lunch, yes?

Ashwin Chandrasekaran, Haripriya Raja and Nikhil Behel found a way to fix all three of these problems in one go; they came up with Brekkie, which serves a balanced, wholesome breakfast straight to your home or your office. It tastes pretty good, too! The ‘breakfast-eers’ also have their own customized vending cart parked at 9th ‘A’ Main on 100 ft Road in Indiranagar.

Brekkie“We realized that breakfast was a problem point on two fronts; first there was a lack of any good wholesome breakfast options and second, a lot of people think it’s alright to skip that meal,” points out Ashwin, who grew up in the Netherlands but decided to shift to India three years ago.

Each Brekkie bag consists of three elements: a main, a side and a treat. The main typically includes stuffed parathas, uthapams, poha, a sandwich, cheela, stuffed idlis, pancakes or rolls. The side element varies from a salad or custard to daliya or muesli. The treat includes either a few slices of cake or a few cookies. The breakfast menu is different every day. “People have identified with the fact that our menu changes daily,” says Ashwin. “We aren’t overly health-related. We’re trying to promote the culture of eating a wholesome breakfast instead,” he adds.

“I had had enough with the greasy food of the Sagars for breakfast,” reveals Nikhil. “I had reached a boiling point to get some good food in the mornings, and a service like Brekkie was sorely needed.” Nikhil spends his time balancing between Brekkie and a wealth management startup that he works for.

BrekkieThe venture has been around for a little over two months now, and they’ve notched up a base of roughly 100 customers per day with more than half of that number being regular subscribers. “I think we’re perceived as a healthy alternative and something to look forward to everyday,” explains Ashwin.

The breakfast is delivered in personalized Brekkie bags in Indiranagar, Ulsoor and MG Road. “The idea of serving people with breakfast the moment they wake up so that they can eat in the comfort of their homes is what drives us,” says Haripriya. She has over three years of experience working with ad agencies on strategy and branding.

“The vending cart is a great way to reach out directly to people who come and buy our stuff. We get to interact with people who may not even be our customers,” reveals Haripriya. “We’ve got some pretty good ideas from the people who walk up to our cart. We also offer tea to everyone who walks up to us, be it cops, cleaners or morning walkers,” she adds. All three founders take turns at managing the cart while the other two work at delivering the breakfast bags.

Their day begins at five in the morning when they start preparing for service. Their menus are planned a week in advance to help with sourcing and planning.

BrekkieMost of their business is generated via their Facebook page and website, along with interactions on Whatsapp groups. The team has also invested in some exciting and thoughtful initiatives; they recently used bags made by the Spastics Society of Karnataka as Brekkie bags to raise awareness for the cause. They’ve also made special treats on Halloween and Thanksgiving to add some charm and a flavor of festivities to the whole experience. Here’s looking forward to what they have in store on Christmas and New Year’s!

How Material Design improves productivity

How Material Design improves productivity

pite the common refrain that multi-tasking means not doing anything well, it’s a critical function of mobile app performance. Users expect to be able to jump quickly between tasks, and can get frustrated if they have to wait for content to re-load when moving from one application to another.

With Lollipop, Google has completely reconfigured how multitasking looks and performs. Instead of just dropping the user back into the app, it allows developers to break apart separate tasks, which then appear as a cascade of distinct windows.

diagram screen relationships 520x400 Multitasking on Google Lollipop: A closer look at how Material Design improves productivity

It gives developers and users more power, as it’s quicker to get back to and find a certain state within an app. Not only can the user get directly back to work, but the developer can make the app more useful for productivity.

The combination of this with the new Material Design is also more aesthetically pleasing, allowing Android apps to have the same kind of polish and elegance that is typically found in iOS.

For the developer, this means making several more decisions about how the app will perform. Fortunately there are several good principles to follow for enabling the right design and programming decisions.

A closer look at Material Design

By now there has been plenty written about Material Design, Google’s new aesthetic for Android 5.0. It ramps up the elegance, relying on touch touch events, more animation, increased white space and allusions to real objects.

It’s the most radical redesign yet for Android, and by and large it’s a major improvement to both the look and functionality of Google’s mobile operating system. You may have already dived into the major features and revamped look of Lollipop, but the goal for this piece is more about how it handles multitasking.

For our purposes we are going to look at what Material Design means in terms of multitasking. The paradigm has switched from moving from one app to another, and instead moving between tasks. The “recent apps” screen has been renamed “Overview,” the idea being it’s giving the user a survey of what they are working on, instead of just showing a list of which apps they had open.

Concurrent activities with Overview

Aesthetically the Overview turns the app-switching screen into a series of cards. Just like Google search and Google Now has done by formatting information into cards, you’ll now begin to see the apps listed this way, frozen at their most recent state.

But it goes deeper, as individual apps can break apart their activities into their own cards. Google’s Gmail app (version 5.0) offers several good examples of putting this into practice.

Gmail compose button 520x924 Multitasking on Google Lollipop: A closer look at how Material Design improves productivity

When you press the compose button, there’s an animation that indicates a new action, hinting that you’ve initiated a separate process. Hit the multitasking icon and you will notice two windows – one for the compose box and the other for the inbox.

Gmail multitasking 220x391 Multitasking on Google Lollipop: A closer look at how Material Design improves productivity Chrome does this as well. Each website becomes its own card that appears separately when multi-tasking (this can be turned off by the user). This makes it much quicker to jump back to a specific web page, instead of multitasking back to Chrome, and then finding the tab you were working on.

Through just these examples, you can see that you have to think of your app less as a closed island and more of a set of pages or windows that users can hop in and out of when needed.

Of course, how deeply to integrate this will depend on the nature of the app. This type of separating of specific tasks will apply more to certain types of applications than others.

Planning out screens

Whatever the new approach looks like, it shouldn’t substitute for good planning of the various screens within the app. As a screen map indicates (pictured) there should be a logical sequence to the app. While this is a good practice in general, it becomes even more important with the new multitasking scheme.

You’ll want to decide what is the most important state for users to move back to when changing up between apps. In Gmail, for example, it makes sense to focus on the compose screen and inbox. With Google search it’s useful to be able to move back to a specific search term instead of starting all over when re-entering the app.

Your app can now have that same kind of flexibility. Perhaps there’s a category list or saved item that serve as a hub for other content. Or a specific note taking or content saving screen. Making such decisions will make your app more efficient, leading to some happier users.

Also, the new Material Design aesthetic plays an important part here. Google has outlined several methods for using the Material Design theme inside your app. With so much of the visual content of your app on display in the Overview, you’ll want to ensure that the status bar and other elements are freshly Material.

google search cards 520x924 Multitasking on Google Lollipop: A closer look at how Material Design improves productivity

Crowding the recent apps list

One of the potential pitfalls with this approach is overwhelming the user with the recent apps list. Right now Google has a cap on the number of concurrent tasks at 50, but even that seems rather high. You also run the risk of annoying someone who has moved on to the other app, but must keep scrolling past all the cards that are open from your app.

It’s best at this time to think of a few core spots that would be a great landing point for re-entering into the app. This will depend on your specific application, but think about what would require the least amount of steps for someone who circles back from another app.

Even the example from the Google search app shows you can definitely have too many places to head back to your app. It can get confusing and somewhat annoying, so hopefully Google will also give some better guidelines and implementation for making this behavior smoother.

The future of multitasking

materialdesign introduction 520x279 Multitasking on Google Lollipop: A closer look at how Material Design improves productivity

Google has taken multitasking in a new direction with Android, making it more powerful for both the developer and the user. The challenge is going to be hitting the right balance between overwhelming one with information and including the utility to make moving between applications a smooth process.

Android developers will want to monitor this trend closely, paying attention to both how Google implements it with its own apps and any future guidelines that it rolls out. In the end, it means more powerful multitasking for your apps, and you’ll want to be sure to take advantage of this feature to keep your app in users’ good graces.

Snap Fashion Extends Its Visual Search Engine App Into Men’s Clothes

Snap Fashion Extends Its Visual Search Engine App Into Men’s Clothes

London fashion startup Snap Fashion has extended its discovery platform into a visual search engine for men’s clothes, as well as women’s. The fashion app is available on Google Play andApple iTunes.

Snap’s visual algorithms were invented and coded by 27-year-old founder Jenny Griffiths, while completing a Masters degree in Computer Science.

She says: “We wanted to create a brand that really resonates with twenty and thirty-somethings. We held a load of focus groups and found that men don’t look to celebrities for their inspiration, but their peers.” So the “Trending” page pulls results of trending products that can be purchased by guys.

“Snap Fashion for Men” uses computer vision technology to find similar items of clothing to those in a photograph, whether it’s been taken on a phone or found online. Results are based on the cut, colour and texture of the photographed item. Its algorithms search major retailers and refine results by different categories of clothing including, outerwear, formal wear, trousers, tops, shorts, accessories and shoes to a similar range of similar items.

Snap Fashion claims to be different because it also does ‘shape matching’ and is more cross platform than competitors.

So far the startup has raised £300,000k from Venrex in 2012, and now claims to be in profit. Snap Fashion was founded in 2011 and launched fashion’s first visual search engine in 2012.

Competitors include ASAP54, a former TechCrunchDisrupt Balltefield Alumni which launched this year. Also, Cortexica launched Style Thief this year after licensing out some technology. And Slyce raised significant funding over in the US.

Facebook Dumps Bing, Will Introduce Its Own Search Tool

Facebook Dumps Bing, Will Introduce Its Own Search Tool

It seems that Facebook quietly removed Bing as its primary search provider over the weekend, announcing plans to debut its own search tool on Monday, according to Reuters.

The report says that Facebook’s new search tool will give users the ability to filter through old comments and other information from friends.

Facebook has been building out its search products for a long time, using Bing as an extra layer to provide results beyond the Interest Graph in an effort to avoid letting rival Google into the system.

A Facebook spokesperson told Reuters: “We’re not currently showing web search results in Facebook Search because we’re focused on helping people find what’s been shared with them on Facebook. We continue to have a great partnership with Microsoft of lots of different areas.”

Microsoft said almost the same thing to VentureBeat: “Facebook recently changed its search experience to focus on helping people tap into information that’s been shared with them on Facebook versus a broader set of web results. We continue to partner with Facebook in many different areas.”

Search is an incredibly difficult space to delve into, and Facebook’s search products will face their own unique challenges in that the closed network, with over 1 billion active users, is home to more than a trillion posts. Zuck said on an analyst conference call in July that his search engineers often remind him that Facebook represents the biggest Web search corpus out there.

It’s a difficult but important obstacle to tackle as Facebook continues to dominate our social imprint on the internet. The social giant has been around for more than a decade, and thus entire lives have been lived and recorded on Facebook. That content is growing exponentially, and search that is tailored to this specific network will likely be crucial.

YouTube quietly starts rolling out a built-in GIF creator

YouTube has quietly started rolling out their own GIF generator. It’s not available for all channels yet, with only certain creators having the option available on some of their videos, found under the sharing options next to email.

The GIF generator is fairly straightfoward. When you select the GIF sharing option, you’ll see a frame-by-frame of the video. Choose a section of up to six seconds in length to create your image. You can then add text to the top and/or bottom of the GIF you wish. Hit Create GIF and you’ll have both direct and embed links, along with other sharing options, letting you show off your new creation wherever you please.

Dropbox makes it easy for workmates to edit Office files

Dropbox makes it easy for workmates to edit Office files

In November, Dropbox users gained the ability to edit Office files from within the app, thanks to its partnership with Microsoft. Now, the company has launched its first set of Project Harmony tools so groups of workmates can take advantage of that feature — but only if they’re Business users part of Dropbox’s early access program. These features, which were first previewed when the company started letting users link their business and personal accounts, can make team projects, well, more bearable than usual.

Each Word, Excel or Powerpoint file now comes with a Dropbox “badge” on the margin, and clicking it reveals options that shows each user who else is editing. It also shows if the other person has saved a newer version and includes an option to generate a link without having to leave the document, spreadsheet or presentation. Dropbox didn’t mention anything about a wider release, but seeing as the company calls these tools the “first phase” of Project Harmony, it probably has more in store to help prevent workplace tiffs.
